Brother, sister injured in Fontana car-to-car shooting

A shooting on the on the 210 freeway in Fontana near Citrus Avenue shut down all westbound lanes for several hours on Thursday morning.

Officer Jesus Garcia with California Highway Patrol said a brother and sister in their early 20s were the victims.

They were driving on the freeway around 6:40 a.m. when investigators said a shooter in another vehicle fired at their car.

"The victims' vehicle was shot on the left-hand side," Garcia said. "The driver was struck in the head and the female passenger was struck on her shoulder with a grazing wound."

Both were rushed to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton where friends said the brother underwent surgery for the bullet that entered his head and exited his eye.

Meantime, the siblings black Honda was left parked on the freeway in the middle of the morning rush hour.

The car was pierced with at least eight bullet holes on the door, window, and windshield.

"With as many bullet holes that we see on the car we are just lucky with as many people driving on the freeway as crowded as it usually is that nobody else was hit," Garcia said.

Investigators stopped all freeway traffic so they could check the lanes for evidence that might lead them to a suspect.

"We have a good witness, a truck driver, who stopped and provided the information," Garcia said.

Investigators also plan to talk with the siblings to find out if they were targeted or if road rage motivated the shooter.

The suspect is believed to have been riding in a grey Honda Civic, 2007 to 2011 model years with tinted windows.
