Clean up continues after mudslide in Hollywood Hills

Cleanup in the Hollywood Hills continued Wednesday evening after an early morning mudslide sent dirt flowing downhill just after midnight.

The debris reached the front doors of many homes near the intersection of Kings Road and Hillside, which created a huge mess.

"It's incredible," neighbor Tom Glavan said. "I walk the streets every morning when I do my hike and to see this it's amazing."

Gushing water from a fire hydrant on Grand View Drive caused the slide, according to the Department of Water and Power
.
Investigators are trying to figure out how the hydrant burst.

They think either a car hit it, or the hillside maybe have just given way.

"The fire hydrant is actually still embedded on the hillside so until we are able to extract it and run some tests we will make a determination as to what exactly happened to it," Albert Rodriguez, LADWP, said.

SkyFox video overhead showed the massive crater that was created when the hillside came down. A trail of mud followed, which extended all the way down to Sunset Boulevard.

DWP geologists have already surveyed the hillside and determined t's stable, but residents are still concerned.

"The water erodes obviously and we don't know how deep it went so it can be dangerous," Glavan said.

Crews with street sweepers and dump trucks worked all day Wednesday to clean up the debris, which could take up to 24 hours to clear.
