LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11) - Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. That means all summer-related goods will be at or near their lowest prices of the year as stores try to clear out their summer inventory ahead of the holidays.
September / Apparel:
Stores are clearing out their inventory from all the back to school sales. Anything you didn’t purchase before the first day of school can be bought in September at deep discounts. Last year, we saw deals from stores like Macy’s and JCPenney in the 20-30% off range. There are even some Pre Labor Day sales at:
• DEAL: Old Navy - get 50% off all jeans, dresses and tees, starting August 31
• DEAL: Ann Taylor - 50% off sale items from August 31 to September 4
September / Grills & Outdoor Furniture:
If you wore out your grill or patio furniture this summer, now is the time to enjoy clearance prices on those items as retailers are putting these large seasonal items on sale before the cold weather hits. For the best deals on grills, shop after Labor Day! Stores have to make room for all their winter gear, which means summer staples like grills will be on sale. Last year we saw deals like $35 off $300 and 30% off grills, plus free shipping at Sears. Although grills are generally associated with the summer, the Fall tends to bring less less hot and humid days which are much more ideal for a backyard BBQ. Rest assured any investment you make this month can still be put to use in the coming weeks.
• DEAL: Wayfair- Up to 70% off patio furniture
• DEAL: Home Depot- Up to 40% off select furniture + additional 10% off
• DEAL: Overstock - up to 70% off furniture, rugs and more, plus get free shipping on orders over $45
September / Appliances:
September and October are the best time to buy big appliances at stores like XXX and XXX. Most big appliance brands have new models coming out in fall, which means discounts on last year’s models. But before you buy a new appliance, check the Energy Star website for special offers and rebates in your area. Refrigerators are the exception to this appliance rule, though. They tend to go on sale in May before new models are released in June.
• Deal: Sears Outlet- Up to 60% off appliances
• Deal: Frys.com- Up to 55% off appliances
Labor Day / Mattresses:
According to the Better Sleep Council, it’s best to replace your mattress every 7-8 years. Labor Day is well known for having great mattress sales and long weekends are prime-time for nontraditional high-ticket items like mattresses to be purchased. The reason being is that people tend to take their time before they make a big investment and a long weekend gives them the free time to look, think about and then buy. Between May and September, many manufacturers mark down older mattress models to make room for new ones, so they tend to hold sales around this time. For example, I’ve seen discounts go as deep as 60% off during the three-day weekend.
• Costco - Up to $1000 off top selling mattresses
• Sleep Number- Up to $800 off select mattresses
• Overstock- Up to 65% of mattresses
September / Air Travel:
Airline ticket sales are common after Labor Day weekend, so start planning that winter getaway and take advantage of the discounts. We expect to see deals from everyone like CheapoAir to TravelZoo. Most airfare sales happen midweek, so look for the best deals when you shop Tuesday evening through Thursday. Another idea for keeping up to date on last minute drops on tickets is to set up fare alerts.
• Deal: CheapoAir- Up to $40 off flight bookings, RMN exclusive
• Deal: TravelZoo - Over 50+ Labor Day travel deals for your end-of-summer getaway
And, a quick pro tip, there are a few things recommended waiting on until later this fall like electronics, large appliances and diamond jewelry!
