Beaches closed in Long Beach after sewage spill in San Gabriel area

All coastal beaches in Long Beach were closed Tuesday due to a sewage spill in the San Gabriel area that was discharging into the ocean.

According to Long Beach health officials, about 250,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the storm system about 33 miles upstream from the city.

The city's health officer, Dr. Mitchell Kushner, ordered the closure of all open coastal beaches until lab results confirm the water is safe.

Kushner also issued a rain advisory for recreational beaches and bays, warning that runoff from the morning rainstorm could increase bacteria levels and put swimmers at risk of illness.
