Parents questioned after little girl found wandering in Compton

A miscommunication between family members may have led to a 3-year-old girl ending up unattended on the streets of Compton, authorities said Sunday.

The child -- clad in leggings, sandals and a pink T-shirt bearing a "Minions'' character riding a unicorn -- was found about 6 p.m. Saturday in the area of Willowbrook Avenue at Alondra Boulevard after a witness spotted her walking alone, sheriff's deputies reported.

Nearby residents were contacted, but no one knew the girl and she was taken to the sheriff's Compton Station as deputies tried to locate her parents.

Around 10 a.m. Sunday, the girl's parents and grandmother contacted the station.

They were interviewed by station detectives and Department of Children and Family Services personnel, but it wasn't immediately clear if they faced criminal allegations or if the girl would be placed in protective custody.

The case remains under investigation.
