Antelope Valley College campus closed due to threat of violence

Antelope Valley College was closed today because of "a threat of violence against the college,'' school officials said.

The closure was announced in a statement posted shortly before 9 a.m. on the college website.

"The college is in regular contact with law enforcement,'' the statement said. "The evening class schedule will be updated by 4 p.m.''

The investigation was being conducted by the sheriff's department, which declined to provide details on the case. Information on evening classes will be posted on the school's website, www.avc.edu.

A college spokeswoman told local news media outlets that the threat came to light overnight via social media. She said the threat was unsubstantiated but the campus was closed out of an abundance of caution.
