Famous junkyard closing, dozens of cats left homeless

More than 30 cats have made the historic U-Pick Parts Junkyard in Sun Valley their home, but that's about to change.

The place is closing up leaving stray, but friendly cats like Clooney, Thelma and Louise will be left homeless.

By January 1st, owner Nathan Adlen says he's closing up shop after more than 50 years. He says with new environmental regulations, it's just not economical for him to keep it open.

"There's probably 30 different reasons:" Adlen said, "The point is my plate's full and I"m trying to make my plate less full."

Adlen reminds us that, not only is this junkyard a home to the cats and a livelihood for locals, it's been a backdrop for many films and tv shows. in 1998, Usher had a train car painted to look like a boom box for one of his music videos. The junkyard was also featured in a recent episode of Supergirl.

But, even Hollywood couldn't save the junkyard.

"When I first found out, it was super overwhelming," Beth Eilers said. Eliers had been coming to the junkyard every day for the past three yeats to take care of the cats. Most she says have been spayed and neutered.

"My fear is that the cats we don't find a place for, hat they're going to go out on the streets and get hit by cars are worse," Eilers said.

Fellow animal advocate Kristi Schneider says they've made a Facebook Page called "Hollywood Junkyard Cats" in an effort to get them adopted. The page features pictures of most of the cats and information about them.

"Our hope is that we can get them into homes and the others, to get them into a new outdoor location," Schneider said.
