Ace commuter train derails in Niles Canyon; calls for search & rescue

ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif. (KTVU) - An Ace commuter train derailed Monday evening in Niles Canyon near Palomares Rd. Emergency personnel are at the scene. A call for search and rescue has been made. Up to 11 ambulances and at least one rescue boat was involved in those efforts.

According the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, the train overturned and at least one train car ended up in the Alameda Creek.

About nine people were reported to have been aboard the train that went into the water. According to Alameda County Fire Dept.. at around 8:30 p.m. all passengers were removed from the derailed train and were being assessed. The train was said to have had 100 plus passengers aboard during the derailment. Passengers are being taken to a nearby fairgrounds in Pleasanton.

Ace tweeted that it was the number 10 train. The route of that train goes from San Jose to Stockton.

Fremont Police Department alerted that Niles Canyon Rd. was shut down around 8 p.m. due to the incident.

Ace alerted that there would be no service on Tuesday due to the derailment.
