A Sex-Crimes Suspect Arrested

Police and park officials say the 35-year-old man they’ve arrested looks very much like the sketch cobbled together that was handed to the media, passed out to people and schools in the neighborhood.

The suspect, Secundino Rodriguez, allegedly tried to rape two women and a minor in South Los Angeles Wetlands Park.

Kevin Regan is the Assistant General Manager of the LA Recreation and Parks Department. He and Detectives say the suspect "was attempting to rape some women jogging alone.”

By all accounts they were jogging along the trails of the park that snakes around heavy vegetation making it possible to obscure an attacker. Detective Karen Garay from Newton Division says,  "he caught them by surprise. If you’re running it (the trail) there are certain portions where you’re not going to be near other people.”

Newton Division Captain Jorge Rodriguez says that one jogger attacked in October. Two more in late February and into March… one a minor. He says after the first one they thought it might have been an isolated incident, but then there was a second and a third. They sent in undercover plain clothes officers and patrolled more.

Recreation and Parks workers check the lighting and the cameras. They checked all of the fences too. One had a break where the suspect could have entered and exited.

Police say Thursday someone spotted a man who looked like the sketch, they called 911 and police came out and arrested the suspect.

Authorities are not saying too much about their suspect except that’s “he is a transient… doesn’t have a stable home and he does have a criminal record” although he is not a registered sex offender according to Detective Garay.
