Funeral held for San Bernardino officer killed in crash with alleged DUI driver

- San Bernardino police Officer Bryce Hanes was honored at a public memorial service on Thursday.

The service had full police honors and was open to the public at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino.

There was a police procession following the memorial in San Bernardino and a graveside service at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands.

The on-duty San Bernardino police officer was killed last week when his patrol car was struck by a suspected drunken driver who ran a red light at an intersection, officials said.

He had just dropped off an inmate at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga when the crash happened, police said.

Hanes, a 12-year veteran of the department, suffered massive injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the chief said at a news conference.

The driver, identified as Archie Green III, was briefly hospitalized and later charged with one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, one count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and one count of driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol content causing injury, the San Bernardino County District Attorney said.

Green appeared in court Tuesday morning where he pleaded not guilty to felony charges.

Hanes, a Redlands resident who spent his entire career with the department's patrol division, is survived by a wife and three children under the age of 12.
