(FOX 11) - The Los Angeles County Fire Department Arson Task Force, the South Gate Police Department along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), confiscated approximately 200,000 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives on May 23.
The seizure of the illegal fireworks, resulting from an investigation by the South Gate Police Department, is estimated to be worth up to $4 million. The South Gate Police Department also arrested five adults in connection with the investigation.
Under the direction of Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby, the Arson Task Force is working with the South Gate Police Department and other local law enforcement officials to decrease the amount of illegal fireworks sold in our communities. The use of illegal fireworks can cause fires and result in severe injuries and burns. If permitted in your community, the Fire Department reminds residents to purchase only certified "Safe and Sane" fireworks.
