Rental company abruptly closes, customers out hundreds of dollars

- “If they tell you $245 and they’ll find you a place - its not real,” a customer who referred to herself as Jennifer said. According to Jennifer, she was scammed out of $245 by this businesses called Sun City Group.

She said, the company promises to set tenants up with rental properties, but they never delivered. “I went to the locations, I picked the houses out, I called them and they said I can make an appointment, but they didn’t pick up anymore,” she said.

Frustrated and confused, Jennifer and other customers decided to visit to the office on Alameda and Washington Blvd. Tuesday only to find out the businesses is now shut down with no explanation.

Debbie Niems, who has a company next door said, it was closed as of Monday morning. “This businesses has seen nothing but family traffic all day everyday,” Niems said. “I feel really bad because we’ve known they’re ripping people off.”

Several customers said the businesses advertised in Spanish language newspapers and was set up as a legitimate shop. “The girls in there are good, they have a customer service a number, you call and they’re good at what they do,” Jennifer said of the suspicious operation.

But Niems said, the business preyed on people who were desperate to find housing.

“Just an easy Google search to find properties available and they’re taking the money for it and that’s not right,” Niems said.

The landlord told FOX 11 the business opened in March 2017, but notified the management office they were moving out on August 1st.

“These people under the circumstances, I guess they were screwing the public and they had the nerve to give proper notice and want their security deposit back,” property manager, Mike Meraz, said.

Meraz said he’s encouraging customers to file a police report, which Jennifer did, but she’s worried about her personal information.

“They got my social, they got everything, so who knows what they’re doing with my information now,” Jennifer said.

Several other customers said they filed police reports with LAPD’s Newton Division.
