Congressman Brad Sherman becomes first to file impeachment article against President Trump

- Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, today became the first member of Congress to introduce an Article of Impeachment against President Donald J. Trump.

House Resolution 438 was introduced on the floor of the U.S. House of Representative Wednesday afternoon. It accuses Trump of abusing his power by attempting to halt the ongoing investigation into his campaign's alleged
collusion with Russian government officials. It specifically cites Trump's alleged attempt to stop an investigation into Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser, and Trump's firing of FBI Director James
Comey.

The entire affair is being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, himself a former director of the FBI.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, deputy White House press secretary, blasted the move by Sherman. "I think that is utterly and completely ridiculous and a political game at its worst,'' she told reporters in a briefing.

Sherman's effort has no support from Republicans and little support from his fellow Democrats, although it was co-sponsored by Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas.

In a statement released last month when he first drafted the wording, Sherman called filing the Article "the first step on a very long road. But if the impulsive incompetency continues, then eventually -- many, many months from now -- Republicans will join the impeachment effort.

"I author Articles of Impeachment not to change our national policy. I served with (Vice President) Mike Pence in Congress for 12 years and I disagree with him on just about everything.  I never dreamed I would author a measure that would put him in the White House. I am introducing Articles of Impeachment to begin a long process to protect our country from abuse of power, obstruction of justice and impulsive, ignorant incompetence.''

Sherman said he hopes the House Judiciary Committee will hold hearings on the matter.
