Threat at Mt. San Jacinto College prompts increased police presence

- A threatening message written on a bathroom stall reads, “December 18th 2016, I will be shooting 12 students 4 teachers then myself, you will *expletive* die.”

“It’s scary because of all the shootings that do go on on school campuses,”  student, Tiffany Verduzco, said.

A campus safety officer at Mt. San Jacinto College found the graffiti in a restroom last Sunday night. Some students had already seen it on a Snapchat image shared hundreds of times.

Administrators at the college also notified students.

“We posted it to social media as well because we wanted everyone to be on high alert to make sure they’re watching their surroundings and reporting any suspicious behavior,” Karin Marriott, Director of Public Information & Marketing, said.

Most students aren’t taking this threat seriously because whoever wrote it said the shooting would happen Dec. 18 -- and that’s a Sunday when students aren’t on campus.

“I think a lot of the students are taking it lightly, but I know the campus police is not and I know that they are very much paying attention,” student Megan Kyriass said.

Additional campus police and Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputies will patrol the campus during the next few weeks. Students said they feel safe, and some have even gone through active shooter training.

“All the classes had a mandatory what to do if there was a shooter scenario so everyone here knows what to do if it does happen we are prepared,” freshman Michaelind Ragsdale said.
