Police: 'Unsafe speed' contributes to deadly crash in Echo Park killing 2 women
ECHO PARK (FOX 11) - By all accounts, what happened Sunday at the corner of Sunset and Rosemont in Echo Park was terrifying.
Police said 46-year old Bryan Gin was behind the wheel of his silver Mustang when he lost control of the car and hit three women standing at a bus stop.
"I heard this scream I don't think I'll ever forget," Neighbor Mike Stanley told FOX 11.
It was the scream of a 51-year-old woman caught under the car. Police said she was one of the three at the bus stop. The other two women, ages 78 and 81, were launched across the street landing by a pet grooming shop called K-9 Loft, authorities said.
They were pronounced dead at the scene.
LAPD Captain Jonathan Tom said the driver of the Mustang tried to pass another car when he lost control.
"These vehicles can become deadly weapons and that was the case here," Tom said.
"From what I heard in my bedroom, it sounded like a car would've been speeding 'cause I heard a lot of screeching and I heard the sound of a high impact," Stanley said.
Investigators blamed "unsafe speed" as the cause of the wreck that crashed into a fire hydrant, a street sign, killed the two women and injured the third.
In one of those "For the Grace of God Go I" moments, a homeless woman was standing where the other women were. Her bags were still there after the wreck.
Two police officers offered to buy her something to eat at the 7-Eleven nearby. They went inside, and that's when all hell broke loose.
Captain Tom said she could have been killed.
Meanwhile, police said the driver remains in the hospital.
The 51-year-old woman caught under the car suffered breaks to both legs and her hip.
The names of the three women have not yet been released.
