Weapon not yet found as Compton deputies investigate fatal officer-involved shooting

- Authorities continue to search for the handgun allegedly pointed at a sheriff's deputy by a suspect who was fatally shot by that deputy during a foot pursuit.

31-year-old Donta Taylor was killed Thursday night near West Arbutus and North Kemp Avenue in Compton after deputies tried to speak to him and he allegedly produced a gun and ran away. The gun is believed to be in a wash in that area.

No deputies were injured in the shooting, which occurred around 8:30p.m. Thursday in the area of West Arbutus Street and North Kemp Avenue.

Taylor died at the scene.

The deputies caught up with Taylor on Arbutus Street, near a wash, where he allegedly pointed a handgun at one of them, drawing fire from one deputy, Jansen said.

A sheriff's department dog was brought out to assist in the search for the suspect's handgun in the wash and surrounding area, Jansen said.

"They said he pointed ... a gun, (and) they tried to retrieve it, but they don't know where the gun (is) at," Taylor's cousin, Monique Desrosiers told FOX11. "If you shot somebody down, shouldn't the gun be lying somewhere?"

"Where's the gun?" Taylor's grandmother, Francile Bridges, said. "I want to know where's the gun at?"

The shooting will be investigated by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau, the Office of the Inspector General, and the District Attorney's Office.
