Two marines help nab attempted murder suspect in Fullerton using 'Pokemon Go'

“Downtown Fullerton is a hotspot for the game,” Ortega said.

But the two would have never thought the game would put them in the right place to catch a wanted man.

“The idea of just coming out just to catch Pokemon and something this major happens it’s something I wasn’t expecting at all,” Soch said.

While playing the game near a Fullerton park the marines witnessed a man bothering two families.

“Just the way he was following the woman with her children it was almost step by step in the same direction almost the same footpath,” Soch said. “It didn’t look like they were together and he just didn’t seem to fit in.”

The two became alarmed when they saw the man inappropriately touch two young boys with a plastic flower.

One child was in front of the Fullerton Museum Center and another was across the street on the jungle gym.

While the parents called police the marines and another witness, Keith Sanders, kept watch on the suspect.

“The good thing is that he wasn’t getting violent,” Ortega said.

When police arrived the guys used their phone this time to capture the arrest on camera.

Fullerton police arrested 39-year-old Jacob Kells for annoying children, but it turns out he was wanted for other crimes, including attempted murder.

The marines said, it was their training to always be aware of their surrounding despite distractions that helped them stop the suspect.

“The game is no different, when we’re walking around we take turns we kind of glance at the phone while the other looks up and around,” Ortega said. “It’s just something that we’re taught to do.”

The suspect is awaiting extradition back to Monterey County where there is a warrant for his arrest.
