Between three undercover operations, the Chino Police Department in partnership with the Chino Valley Fire District confiscated nearly 600 pounds of illegal fireworks, more than double the amount from years past.
"The illegal fireworks confiscated by the Chino Police Department will go a long way toward keeping the communities we serve safe during this Fourth of July holiday. Illegal fireworks not only compromise your own safety, but also the safety of others. They can cause serious injuries and can cause devastating fires," said Fire Chief Tim Shackelford.
On June 22, 2016, officers responded to an online sales advertisement for fireworks. This first sale netted approximately 25 pounds of illegal fireworks. Raymond Flores, of Chino was arrested and booked into West Valley Detention Center for violation of Health and Safety Code (H&S)12670 Advertise Sales of Dangerous Fireworks without a Permit; H&S 12676 Sales of Dangerous Fireworks without a Permit ; H&S 12677 Possession of Dangerous Fireworks without a Permit.
On June 24 investigators responded to another online sales advertisement for fireworks. This operation netted 500 pounds of illegal fireworks. Lauro Aguirre, of Chino was booked into West Valley Detention Center for violation of H&S Code 12700(b)(3) Possession of dangerous fireworks over 100 pounds (felony), and 18710 P.C. Possession of explosives
On June 28, 2016, officers responded to an online sales advertisement and brokered a deal for illegal fireworks. This sale netted approximately 40 pounds of illegal explosives. Francisco Morales, of Chino Hills was arrested and booked into West Valley Detention Center for violation of Health &Safety Code 12688 - Advertising Sale of Fireworks; H&S 12676 - Sale of Dangerous Fireworks without Permit and H&S 12677 - Possess Dangerous Fireworks without a Permit
In comparison to previous years, the total amount confiscated between these three operations is more than double the total confiscated last year, which was 137 pounds.
Police Chief Karen Comstock, states, "We are very pleased with the results of the pre fourth of July operations. Make no mistake, Chino PD will continue to strictly enforce the city ordinance as it relates to fireworks. While safe and sane are legal, inappropriate use of "safe and sane" fireworks and possession or use of illegal fireworks will not be tolerated in Chino. These operations are just the beginning of our commitment to making sure the chino community celebrates responsibly.
