Waze will now direct L.A. drivers away from troublesome intersections

- The popular driving navigation app Waze announced Friday it will begin steering drivers in Los Angeles away from troublesome intersections- such as ones with no traffic light, a constant flow of traffic, limited visibility, or some combination of the three.

The company wrote on its website: 'to handle this hyperlocal driving issue, Waze created a new routing feature: Difficult Intersections. This new feature bypasses difficult intersections when possible, to promote a safer, less stressful drive.'

The feature, which is automatically enabled for drivers in Los Angeles, but can be disabled in Navigation Settings, aims to balance an efficient ETA while limiting difficult intersections. The company says drivers may still be routed through a difficult intersection when the bypassing route is significantly longer.

Waze says the goal of the feature is to reduce the amount of tricky intersections, not eliminate them.

L.A. is the first region to get the new feature, and the company is relying on users to add troublesome intersections to its database.
