Cynthia Brock, 53, of Costa Mesa was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Orange County Coroner's Office.
The collision occurred at 11:40 p.m. Friday on the freeway's northbound lanes, approaching Dyer Road, according to a CHP report.
Brock was driving a 1982 Toyota Celica in the fast lane when it struck a mattress in the roadway and then hit center the divider, according to the CHP's summary.
Brock's Celica came to a rest sideways on the freeway. A 2006 Ford Freestar van driven by Sherwin Ali Sabzerou, 19, of Irvine, struck the driver's side of Brock's Celica.
The Celica then spun into the path of a 1999 Toyota sedan, which rear-ended the Celica. The Celica spun and stopped facing the wrong way on the freeway, and was then hit head-on by a 1995 Honda. Three of the four vehicles involved in the crash were disabled.
According to the CHP, Sabzerou drove his van approximately 500 feet north of the scene and bailed out of it on the right shoulder, and ran into the night. CHP officers tracked him to his Irvine home and arrested him for suspicion of drunken driving.
Two people suffered minor injuries during the crash and were transported to Western Medical Center.
