A video played during a baseball game is causing some controversy.
On Memorial Day the Fresno Grizzlies, a minor league baseball team, played a video called “Memorial Day Tribute- We are Americans” which was filled with patriotic-themed images playing behind excerpts from President Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural speech. Towards the end, as Reagan mentions “enemies of freedom” the video shows images of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Fidel Castro and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Since then raisin company, Sun-Maid, which is based in Fresno County, has terminated its sponsorship with the Fresno Grizzlies. The company acknowledged the Grizzlies apologized but said terminating the sponsorship was the right thing to do. In statement the company said “This decision is not meant to provide any political perspective whatsoever. It doesn’t matter which end of the political spectrum you’re on”.
The Fresno Grizzlies have apologized for airing the video, saying it was an accident. In a statement they said “The video was not produced, created or commissioned by the Fresno Grizzlies. It was carelessly taken from YouTube. There are multiple versions of this video available on the internet, the version that our employee selected contained offensive content. The airing of the video in the ballpark was the result of an unintentional oversight by an employee who did not view the video in its entirety.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has responded—saying words matter and she’s gotten death threats after hateful messages about her have aired.
What people don’t (maybe do) realize is when orgs air these hateful messages, my life changes bc of the flood of death threats they inspire.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 28, 2019
I‘ve had mornings where I wake up & the 1st thing I do w/ my coffee is review photos of the men (it’s always men) who want to kill me. https://t.co/hiYbPghad7
As of Thursday, two additional sponsors have dropped the Grizzlies, they are Dos Equis and Tecate.
Tecate has always been about togetherness and we do not support the views expressed in the video, that was aired during the Fresno Grizzlies game on Memorial day. We have ended this relationship effective immediately and have let the team know of our decision.— Tecate (@tecate) May 31, 2019
In a statement Dos Equis said “We are disheartened to learn of the views expressed in the video that aired during Monday’s Fresno Grizzlies game, as they do not reflect our core values.”
The Triple- A minor league team is an affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
