Ax-Wielding Man Arrested For Allegedly Threatening Photographer Taking Pictures Of Transients

SANTA ANA (CNS/FOX 11) - An ax-wielding man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of threatening a photographer snapping pictures of transients near the city's government buildings.

Police were called just after 9:05 a.m. about a man waving an ax at Ross Street and Civic Center Drive, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The victim was taking photos of homeless people who frequent the campus of government offices, which angered the suspect, Bertagna said.

Police later learned the car the suspect was in when the photographer was taking pictures was reported stolen, Bertagna said.

After the suspect chased off the first victim he noticed another man video-recording the incident on his phone, prompting the suspect to confront him as well with the ax, Bertagna said.

The second victim ran to his car and got away, but not before the suspect whacked the car with the ax a couple of times, Bertagna said.

Isaiah Gassaway, 23, of Santa Ana, was booked on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery and possession of stolen property, Bertagna said.
