Community responds to boy's birthday card request

From Iraq to Australia, people are reacting to a 9-year-old boy's birthday request. Chase Howard is turning ten on 9/19/16 and instead of toys, he's asking for birthday cards.

Within 24 hours of FOX 5 sharing Howard's story, it was viewed nearly 200,000 times.

"It would make me feel special if people sent me cards," Chase Howard told FOX 5 News on Monday.

Howard's family said Chase can't have a typical birthday party because he's lost mobility in his legs.

Chase has a rare and fatal form of Muscular Dystrophy. It's called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and it affects less than 200,000 people in the United States each year.

There is no cure and Chase is confined to a wheelchair.

"I'm a special kid," Chase said. "I feel happy every day even though I'm in a wheelchair, but I am a great kid."

Chase has already said when he gets to heaven he gets new legs.

His family told FOX 5 the life expectancy for people with DMD is, on average, 25-years-old.

Howard's family tells FOX 5 they are planning a community get together for Chase on 9/18. More details to come.
