7-Year-Old Girl Given A New Prosthetic Hand Made By A 3D Printer

Build It Workspace is a storefront in Los Alamitos, where hobbyists and amateur engineer types can build all kinds of crafts and gadgets by using consumer friendly 3D printers. But now, that little storefront has stepped into a whole new spotlight, actually building a left hand and forearms for a 7-year-old girl.

Faith Lennox lost the limb when she was baby, after complications during her mother's labor. Now, this little girl has adapted quite well and has not allowed the disability to, well, disable her. But the issue of prosthetics has been a difficult one. First of all, she has found them bulky and heavy. Then, there is the cost, with a myoelectric hand costing up to $40 thousand dollars. On a child who is growing at the rate of any other 7 year old, that would mean a new prosthetic every two years.

"We couldn't afford that!" says Faith's mother, Nicolle. They contacted the people at Build It Workspace with the question of wether they could help out....and they did. Mark Lengsfeld, who owns the company, says it took a few tries, but working with prosthetic specialists, they came up with a prototype. Faith actually got to pick the colors, and help build it. Thanks to a non-profit, e-NABLE,the new hand ended up costing about $50.00.

As Faith rides her bike, with her new hand helping her steer, her family and Lengsfeld look on. One can see the amazement in their faces, especially when we ask the question: "do you realize what you've just accomplished?" and they shake their heads, answering: "there are no words to describe it!".

Build it Workspace is located at 4478 Cerritos Avenue, in Los Alamitos.

As for Faith, she is off on her bike, waving a bright purple, blue and pink hand....when she outgrows this one, she may go for some extra yellow!
