Controversy Continues To Linger Over The Death Of Ezell Ford

Charlie Beck looked , as always, calm cool and collected as he left yet another controversial emotional public meeting of his bosses, the civilian Los Angeles Police Commission.

Critics demanded they fire Beck, and they taunted him with that famous ''na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey... good bye ''song as he walked out. If he was bothered, he didn't show it, telling me afterwards, "I keep in mind, and I hope the media keeps in mind, that this is a very small number of members of the community..... they just happen come to the Police Commission meetings every Tuesday.''

Beck believes, as do many others, that the LAPD has the overwhelming support of the community, though no real scientific surveys on that exist. The LAPD is use to controversy, the Ezell Ford shooting while tragic for so many, could be viewed through that prism of yet another shooting that police view as justified and critics view, bluntly, as murder.

This of course has not been helped by the fact that Beck 's conclusion on last August's shooting of the 25-year-old mentally challenged man was totally 'in policy' but the Police Commission ruled unanimously that one of the two officers was out of policy because the shooting in essence resulted from an illegal stop.

Beck disagrees strongly, but said to a small number of reporters after today's meeting that he respects the Commissioners, thinks they're all good people trying to do that right thing , '' as we all are. '' Not sure if he meant to include in that last comment the critics who call his officers murderers insult him to his face in the most vile language in the ''public comment'' session of the open meeting, and believe he should be fired.
