BBQ Restaurant To Host 'White Appreciation Day'

(FOX 11) The Hispanic owners of a barbecue restaurant in Milliken, Colorado plan to host a "White Appreciation Day" in June, offering a 10 percent discount.

According to 9News, the day started as a joke but is now scheduled to actually happen June 11.  Edgar Antillon and Miguel Jimenez recently purchased the restaurant, and plan to offer a 10 percent discount to all white customers.

"We have a whole month for Black History Month," Antillon told 9News. "We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month, so we thought the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate white Americans."

Both men said they expect to receive backlash about the day, as many people in the community have already voiced their opposition on the restaurant's Facebook page.

"It's a perpetuation of racism," Weld County civil rights activist and community organizer Ricardo Romero told 9News.

Antillon told news outlets that "White Appreciation Day" isn't meant to discriminate, but bring people together. He added that as a Hispanic male, he has been the target of racism in the past.

He hopes the day will instead prompt others to think differently.

"We're all American, whether you came from a different country or you were born here," Antillon said.
