Carl Moore, who lives near Sacramento, said the bear was moving in close to his house when he heard his chihuahua screaming in terror.
He jumped into action.
"I raised both hands in the air and I cussed at him, 'Rrraaaaaaa! Get out of here you b**tard," he said, but the bear ignored him.
So, the ex-marine gave the bear a knuckle sandwich -- and it ran off.
"Boom, I hit him good," Moore said.
He's lost three dozen chickens over the past few weeks and was convinced the bear was after his dogs, according to FOX 40.
"These dogs are my babies," Moore said.
Fish and Wildlife rangers believe the bear who ran off after being hit weighed about 300 pounds.
