Midday Sunday: New LA Parking Signs

(FOX 11) The City of Los Angeles is experimenting with a way to avoid confusion about when it's legal to park and when a driver will get a ticket or be towed away. New graphical signs are going up in the Downtown Los Angeles area.

They show the legal and illegal parking hours as a bar graph instead of relying only words printed on several different signs that can be very difficult to understand. Los Angeles City Council member Paul Krekorian, representing the Second District is sponsoring the $65,000 test program.

The Second District stretches from Studio City across the Hollywood Hills to Valley Glen, Studio City and Sun Valley.

Mayor Eric Garcetti endorses the plan, saying parking signs "should not look like hieroglyphics." Both the Mayor and Councilman Krekorian emphasize that the city's goal is not to collect fines from parking violations, but to make driving in Los Angeles a very positive experience.

Today's program also includes Dr. Jerry Turney, the Chief Biologist for the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner's Office. The draught is requiring everyone in California to make drastic cutbacks in water usage. Dr. Turney talks about ways to make significant changes to the ways we water our decorative plants and bushes as well as the fruit producing trees that are often found around California homes. The department's research has shown that most Californians over-water their plants. Simply watering them appropriately will not only make the plants healthier, but also make significant reductions in the amount of water we are using.

The Agricultural Commissioner's website is acwm.lacounty.gov.
