To get answers, we invited three top officials with three major Southern California water agencies to address our questions.
*Assistant General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Debra Man
*Marty Adams is the Sr. Asst. General Manager for Water Systems for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power
*Kevin Wattier is the General Manager of the Long Beach Water Department
All three are still assessing what the State Water Resources Board's cuts will mean. They are tough. LADWP and LBWD have worked hard at conservation. They found the proposed cuts tougher than they expected. MWD has cut the two retailers by 15% which they seem to feel is more reasonable.
In this segment, they are candid about their disappointment but hopeful they can meet whatever goals are required. There are also financial implications for all of us.
It is possible to make your home conservation-friendly! We visited Matt Dickens in Saugus. He's been working in all aspects of his home to conserve. But, conservation is his job. He deals with water conservation at the Valencia Water Company.
All three of our guests are firm believers in the need for homeowners to turn their landscapes into xeriscapes. Xeriscapes are rock or wood-chip yards with drought resistant vegetation. Marty Adams says DWP rebates have already been responsible for 14 million sq ft of grass removed to date by summertime they're expecting another eight million.
In this segment, Adams also admits for those who live in apartment buildings water-related responsibilities are challenging.
Our three guests are convinced tougher fines are in our future. Kevin Wattier says Long Beach has already been fining homeowners and companies and continue to install smart meters to determine when 'water wasters' should be fined.
Debra Man says Southern Californians overall have done well, but more is needed. She says vigilance and behavior changes are needed.
The bottom line is that DWP and Long Beach Water are going to have to ramp up enforcement efforts as California deals with California's historic drought and water crisis.
