$50K Reward Offered For Hit-And-Run Driver Who Struck Elderly Woman

LOS ANGELES (CNS/FOX 11) - Authorities announced a $50,000 reward Thursday for help in finding the hit-and-run motorist responsible for critically injuring an 86-year-old woman who was run down in a crosswalk near USC.

Barbara Summerfield was injured about 8 a.m. March 16 at Adams Boulevard and Figueroa Street. Police released security video showing her crossing the street as an SUV approached.

The vehicle was described as a silver, late-model Infiniti SUV, possibly a QX or FX model, said Los Angeles police Officer Drake Madison. No description of the motorist was released.

"The suspect collided with the pedestrian and continued northbound on Figueroa Street,'' Madison said. "After driving approximately one block north, the suspect made a U-turn and drove past the victim in the southbound lanes. He continued to drive around the USC campus at a high rate of speed, and, on one occasion, drove through a red light.''

The reward authorized by the Los Angeles City Council was announced at a mid-morning news conference at the accident scene.

Felicia Summerfield told reporters that she has seen the security video showing her mother being hit as she crossed the busy street.

"I can't go past the image where the car hits my mother and makes contact,'' she said. "I turn away.''

City Councilman Curren Price said the victim is a retired LAX drug officer who suffered two broken legs, cracked ribs, a quadruple pelvis fracture and head injuries.

"As she continues to fight for her life, today we stand up for her, to ensure that whoever is responsible for this terrible act is brought to justice,'' Price said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the LAPD South Traffic Division at (323) 421-2500, or (877) LAPD-247.
