Suspected Car Thief Killed During Chase In San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP/FOX 11) - Police shot and killed a suspected car thief Friday during a chase on a San Bernardino freeway.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. Friday on northbound Interstate 215. It snarled traffic on the key route from Southern California to Las Vegas as travelers sought to leave for the three-day weekend.

Police Lt. Richard Lawhead said officers began chasing the suspected thief on city streets.

The SUV then moved onto the freeway.

Lawhead says the driver hit several police cars, including one head-on, and was shot by officers as he tried to ram another patrol car.

The San Bernardino Police Department confirmed the driver died at the scene. His name hasn't been released.

No officers were hurt.
