6 People Stabbed In Long Beach; Police Fatally Shoot Suspect

LONG BEACH (CNS/FOX 11) - Long Beach police released the name of a man Saturday they say went on a stabbing spree Friday night that left six people injured and the suspect dead.

The suspect, shot and killed by police at the scene, was identified as Derrick Lee Hunt, 28, according to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department, which also reported that a knife was recovered at the scene.

"The motive for this crime remains unclear," according to the statement. "Any previous criminal history of Hunt is not being released."

Police said Hunt stabbed his 29-year-old wife, her 25-year-old brother and their neighbor -- a 24-year-old man -- at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of East Artesia Boulevard, then walked across Artesia Boulevard to a convalescent home on the south side of street.

Hunt allegedly stabbed three employees at the convalescent home. They were a 23-year-old woman from Bell Gardens, a 33-year-old woman from Los Angeles and a 24-year-old woman from Whittier, according to the LBPD statement.

Police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:17 p.m. Friday on a call of a stabbing in progress with multiple victims, LBPD Sgt. Megan Zabel said.

"Citizens were frantically waving down the officers and pointing in the direction of where the suspect could be located,'' according to the news statement. "With the help of these citizens, the officers were able to quickly
locate the suspect."

Officers confronted the suspect, at which point the shooting occurred, Zabel said. The suspect died at the scene, she said.

Paramedics rushed five of the six stabbing victims to area hospitals. The victim who was not transported was treated at the scene for superficial wounds. The hospitalized victims were listed in stable condition.

Anyone with information regarding the stabbing attacks was asked to call the Long Beach Police Homicide Detail at (562) 570-7244.
