180-Acre Orange County Brush Fire Sparked By Brush Mower

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) - Orange County authorities say a spark from a Caltrans crew mowing brush probably caused a wildfire that forced the evacuation of a campground.

City News Service says the crew was working near State Route 241 near Irvine Lake when the fire broke out Monday morning. A water truck was following the mower but couldn't extinguish the blaze.

The fire in the unincorporated Silverado Canyon area roared through tinder-dry brush, burned three abandoned homes and forced about a dozen campers to leave.

It's destroyed 180 acres of land and is 65 percent contained Tuesday afternoon. Nearly 200 firefighters are on the line.

No injuries are reported.
