1 dead after car strikes U.S. 19 support pillar

A portion of westbound Bryan Dairy Road, or 118th Avenue, was shut down for hours following a single vehicle crash that killed at least one person early Monday morning.

Pinellas Park police say it happened shortly after 3 a.m. under the U.S. 19 Highway overpass.

They believe what appears to be a white pickup truck was traveling northbound on the U.S. Highway 19 frontage Road when it struck one of the support pillars of the overpass and caught on fire.

The driver, and sole person in the car, did not survive.

Traffic homicide investigators were on scene for most of the morning. The fire department also requested a Department of Transportation inspector to examine the overpass for structural damage.

The entire westbound side of Bryan Dairy Road (118th Avenue) was shut down under the overpass, but has since reopened.

FOX 13 will continue with updates as they become available.
