Chipotle to launch temporary summer loyalty program

- Chipotle is looking to win back customers by launching "Chiptopia," a temporary summer rewards program that offers free food beginning July 1.

Chipotle customers will receive rewards for making multiple visits to Chipotle within a given month.

There are three different status levels to the program: mild, medium and hot.

Customers must spend at least $6 to earn a credit. During each month of the program, the credits reset. 

After four visits, the customer earns "mild" status and a free entrée. A customer's eighth credit within a month earns another free entrée and a bump to "medium" status.

After eleven visits within a month, the customer gets a third free entree and a promotion to "hot" status.

Customers who reach hot status level all three months will also receive free catering for 20.  

Chipotle has given away millions of burritos through coupons for entrees to try to fill up empty locations after an E. coli outbreak and norovirus cases last year sent sales plunging. 

The food chain, which has about 2,000 locations, said it will gauge feedback in its consideration of an ongoing rewards program.
