Lorena paints a perfect picture of a forever family

Singer/songwriter Pharrell Williams was once quoted as saying, “Life is a blank canvas. You are the painter and hence the paint brush is in your hands.” Well, this week it’s Lorena (2004) who is the painter at Pasadena’s Color Me Mine pottery studio.

Lorena enjoyed picking which ceramic piece to paint and was amazed at the dozens of pieces from which she could choose. Lorena liked that she could design her own piece to reflect her own style by using colors she selected.

Lorena has dreams of painting her life’s blank canvas with lots of experiences. These experiences range from getting a manicure at a nail salon, going to a soccer or Dodger game, and improving her volleyball skills. Her ultimate dream is to become a doctor so that she can help people. Lorena is not just a dreamer, though – she knows that she will need to study hard to become a doctor. Currently, she gets up at 5:00 a.m. in order to be ready for the bus that takes her to summer school. Lorena’s favorite subject is math and she states that she likes going to school -- even in the summer -- because she likes to learn. Of course, the opportunity to see her friends there is an added bonus!

Lorena speaks English and Spanish and while she’s initially shy, once she opens up she can be talkative, silly and funny. Lorena thrives when she receives attention from others and might do best in the home where she doesn’t have to competitively vie for attention. Lorena likes watching the Disney channel, listening to salsa music, and her foster mother says that Lorena likes to help out whenever possible. Lorena is happiest when she is busy so she will keep herself occupied by drawing, going to the mall to buy bracelet and barrette accessories, socializing with her friends or helping out in the kitchen – especially if the menu includes Mexican food or macaroni and cheese!

Lorena is looking forward to trying out new things with and sharing experiences and memories as part of an adoptive family. At the same time, it’s important for Lorena to maintain some of the established connections that she already has. Lorena is working on moving beyond past circumstances with a goal of learning more effective coping skills. And while the paint brush that will determine the look of Lorena’s life is ultimately in her hands, she needs guidance, instruction and inspiration while working on her masterpiece.

If you can see yourself helping shape, give hue and provide supportive texture to the life of a young girl like Lorena, watch this week’s Wednesday’s Child.
