In just 3 short weeks, Kobe Bryant will play his last home game for the Los Angeles Lakers before retiring. But before he goes, he wanted to help Wednesday’s Child with recruiting a forever family for another “lucky fan” from foster care.
And while we had numerous children to choose from, Gerardo (2002) was the lucky one selected for the final Wednesday’s Child one-on-one with Laker great, # 24 Kobe Bryant.
To get the full Laker effect, Gerardo arrived early and watched the goings-on from courtside. We also took advantage of this pre-game time to learn more about Gerardo and to discuss finding a forever family. In talking with Gerardo, we were reminded that for kids in foster care who have had more than their share of let-downs, taking a leap of faith from foster care into finding a forever family seems like a risky play.
Besides being a basketball fan who supports the Lakers, Gerardo is a witty and articulate youth who hopes to be a lawyer someday. In the moment though, the only court Gerardo was focused on was the basketball court where Kobe’s anticipated arrival was growing close. Gerardo smiled ear to ear when #24 arrived – and Gerardo could hardly contain himself when he was given the opportunity to not just meet but spend some quality time interviewing his favorite Laker! And they both seemed to get a real kick out of Kobe “signing over” a pair of his shoes to Gerardo!
Gerardo is a friendly and affectionate youth who yearns to have some of what has been missing from his life as far as family and role models. We know there is a family out there waiting to discover how lucky they could be to fill in the roster for Gerardo’s forever family.
