DIY dessert bars for the holidays

We're going to take your entertaining game to a new level. Don't stress about serving desserts at your holiday party... Have your guest create their own treats.

The holidays are a great time to entertain your guests by having them entertain themselves..  creating their own holiday treats.

1. BLACKMARKET BAKERY - DIY GINGERBREAD PEOPLE

Blackmarket Bakery Chef/Owner Rachel Klemek doesn't believe that Gingerbread Men & Women should be restricted to the holidays! In fact, her love of gingerbread runs so deep, that she offers Gingerbread People throughout the year - dressed up for any occasion or holiday! Blackmarket Bakery offers a selection of fresh, whole-foods based items that are pleasing to the body and the mind. By using baking fundamentals – butter, flour, sugar and eggs (all blackmarket goods during WWII) – Chef Rachel focuses on delivering a culinary experience that revolves around natural ingredients, complex textures, and global flavors.

Blackmarket Bakery has locations at The CAMP in Costa Mesa and the Artists Village in Santa Ana.

2. poqetDONUTS - DIY DOUGHNUTS

Irvine-based poqetDONUTS is the first doughnut shop in Orange County to offer custom doughnuts alongside signature gourmet creations!  This unique shop offers doughnut options, and a range of custards, fillings, glazes and toppings to satisfy a variety of palates. This is a chance to create something you love - and who doesn't love a good doughnut?

The name poqet, pronounced “pocket,” is derived from a folklore story of two best friends who met on a park bench daily to share doughnuts, which were kept in their pockets. The story of these “pocket donut” friends is placed on the wall inside the shop to provide a simple explanation of the name’s origins to guests.

3. SUSHI ROKU - DIY ZEN S'MORES

Guests don’t typically expect a fun, delicious, and innovative dessert menu at Japanese restaurants, but Sushi Roku's Pastry Chef Juan Sanchez creates seasonal dessert menus and weekly specials. One of Sushi Roku’s most popular desserts—and one that never gets rotated out seasonally—is the build-your-own tabletop Zen S’mores with green tea truffles, dark chocolate squares, raked graham cracker “sand,” housemade marshmallows and dipping sauces, and an open flame for toasting.  Sushi Roku’s Zen S’mores are nostalgic, great for sharing, and interactive—they come with skewers and an open flame for toasting. Many guests have sought inspiration from this dessert to recreate the experience at home! S’mores are always fun for guests, because they are sophisticated, grown-up interpretations of classic kids treats. These s’mores are available year-round, not just for the holiday.
