Money Matters: Save money by shopping smarter

It's easy to get in trouble online shopping, especially during the holidays. Nicole Lapin is here with top 5 ways to break bad online shopping habits and outsmart online retailers in time for the holidays, and year-round

Tip 1: Unsubscribe from sale emails.

It’s annoying to do but your wallet will thank you when you avoid your next impulse because that email showed up. An easy way to do this quickly is to unsubscribe in bulk through a site like

Also, set up a separate email account for shopping so you're not tempted and when you do decide you are buying something, you can locate the sale email if you have one easily.

Tip 2: Get Appy and Savvy

If you're jonesing for something but it's not on sale yet, sign up for Shoptagr and you'll be alerted when it does go on sale. Also you can install Honey in your browser and it will search for any coupons online before you check out of a site automatically.

Tip 3: Make a List

Just like you would do at the grocery store. It's easy to go crazy clicking and buying, especially if you're tired or in a bad mood. Write a list so you know what you are searching for and you're less likely to get sucked down online shopping rabbit holes.

Tip 4: Clear your cookies

Do you ever notice that pair of sandals you were spying keep following you around the internet in the form of ads on the side of your email or on Facebook? I used to think, “how does the web know that I’m dreaming about those?!” Well, it’s a smart way advertisers follow (haunt!)  you in hopes that you’ll eventually buy that item because every time you look at something you are leaving a trail of “cookies.” So, yeah, they’re savvy in that way but you’re savvier. Go to your browser and click “clear cookies” so you’re no longer tempted by those sandals. That way you’re not leaving a trail for retailers but indulging when you want to do not when they do!

Tip 5: Wait 24-hours before clicking ‘check out.’

Give yourself a “cooling off period.” Put the item you’re looking at in your shopping cart, but don’t check out right away. After 24 hours do you still want it that bad? More often than not, you’re more “meh” about it the next day.
