Five shopping hacks to save money during the holidays

- 1. Make Your Birthday Sooner

It’s a sneaky-ish tactic, sure, but who hasn’t harnessed the power of birthday deals? When you sign up for their newsletter, many retailers and brands will ask you for your birthday. Some of them offer special discounts on or just before that special day in order to coax you into splurging on yourself.

If you’re looking to make a certain purchase in the near future, consider signing up for that company’s email newsletter and setting your birthday to sometime in the very-near future. It’s not a guaranteed path to savings, but occasionally, they’ll send you a special birthday coupon code or discount that’ll be tough turn down. Just don’t be disappointed when they don’t reach out on your real birthday.

2. Sign up for Deals & Coupons Directly

No more coupon hunting on Google! With this browser plugin (takes 30 seconds to add!), every time you go to an online store, all the best coupons and deals will automatically pop up! It's that easy.
Plus, once it's added, if you want, you can choose a cause an a percentage of what you spend at thousands of stores will be donated to that cause at no cost to you! To date, more than $12 million has been raised to feed homeless pets, build playgrounds, pay for healthcare needs and more!

3. Use Price Comparsion Websites

Sometimes, it pays (or in this case, saves) to compare. Comparison shopping engines (CSE's) give ecommerce merchants the opportunity to attract new customers, increase sales, and go head-to-head against the competition.

4. Actually Subscribe to Email Newsletters

Before you write this one off entirely, I’ll say that we all understand the annoyance of getting dozens of retailer emails every day. And while I don’t wish inbox purgatory on anyone, email is the most direct way for brands to communicate sales, discounts, and specials with their most loyal customers and fans. Yes, they’re hitting you up to buy (and often), but in exchange they tend to reward subscribers with better deals than they’ll find anywhere else online.

Still don’t think it’s worth the email rush or don’t want to bother sorting into multiple folders? Try setting up an email account solely for brand newsletters, then login and search for recent discounts when you’re in the mood to buy!

5. Let Items Sit in Your Cart — and Be Patient

Part of the appeal of online shopping can be the instant gratification of owning a product, but if you practice a little bit of patience, hidden savings are bound to pop up.

If you want to unlock these hidden discounts, try going through most of the purchasing process on a retailer’s website. Select the items you want, place them into a cart, start entering checkout information and your email address, but stop short of putting in your payment credentials or actually checking out. Then exit the page and wait for a day or two. Often times, stores will send you an email with a special discount in an effort to get you to complete your purchase.
