Masi Oka plays what's called an ‘Evolved Human’ or ‘Evo’ on the sci-fi series ‘Heroes Reborn.’ He has the power to travel through time and take people with him.
From the original critically acclaimed 2006 'Heroes' series, comes 'Heroes Reborn,' an epic 13-episode event series that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities.
Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor Masi Oka burst onto the scene starring in NBC’s drama series “Heroes”, a role for which he received his nominations. Oka can now be seen in the role of the eccentric Coroner on the hit series “Hawaii 5-0”, a Coroner whose piano playing in the autopsy room helps him figure out how the people on his table died. No stranger to television, Oka has had recurring roles on NBC’s “Scrubs” and Fox’s “Luis” and has also guest starred on “Without a Trace,” “Joey,” “Reba,” “Still Standing,” “Will & Grace,” “Yes, Dear” and “The Gilmore Girls.”
Oka recently appeared in the feature film “JOBS” and is stepping behind the camera on the feature film adaption of the worldwide phenomenon Japanese Anime “Deathnote” which he will produce with VIZ Productions, Dan Lin, and Roy Lee. Oka starred in the feature film remake of a television classic “Get Smart” and its companion DVD release, “Get Smarter,” which were both released in 2008. His additional feature film credits include roles in “Along Came Polly,” “Austin Powers in Goldmember,” and “Friends with Benefits.”
With a background in improvisation, Oka has appeared at The Groundlings, ImprovOlympics, Second City and TheatreSports. His improvisational expertise has been showcased with guest appearances as various characters on “Punk'd,” “Reno 911” and “The Jamie Kennedy Experiment.” He currently is working with Yoshimoto to bring the famed Second City to Japan and thereby introducing American Improv to that market.
In addition to his very public roles, Oka works behind the scenes as an advisor to JETRO and a cultural envoy to the US Embassy, bringing the gaps between Japan and Hollywood in the arts and business.
After graduating Brown University with degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science and a Theatre Arts minor, Oka pursued an acting career while taking his first job at George Lucas’ Oscar-winning special effects house Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) providing technology for groundbreaking effects for more than 30 films. Oka’s strong background in computer science laid the groundwork for his starting Mobius Digital, a gaming company that has successfully launched several apps with more in development.
Oka was born in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to Los Angeles at age six, where he currently resides. He is fluent in Japanese and proficient in Spanish. His hobbies include Kendo/Japanese sword fighting, fencing, playing table tennis, watching romantic comedies, playing the piano and singing. Additionally Oka sits on the Celebrity Cabinet of the American Red Cross.
'Heroes Reborn' airs Thursday night, October 29th at 8:00pm on NBC.
