Justina Machado on USA's new narco-drama 'Queen of the South'

- Actress Justina Machado stopped by Good Day LA on Thursday to talk about the new USA drama "Queen of the South," which tells the story of Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) -- a woman who is forced to seek refuge in America after her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico.

Brenda (Machado) and her husband Chino befriend Teresa when she starts dating Guero.

Chino and Guero worked together in the same cartel.

"I think right now what we’re really trying to do is just survive," Machado said of characters Brenda and Teresa. "What’s important about this show is it doesn’t glorify this world. It actually shows people’s worlds falling apart because of this. It’s more of a survival thing – and then whatever comes out of it, comes out of it."

The series is an adaptation of the best-selling novel "La Reina Del Sur" and popular telenovela of the same title on Telemundo.

Machado is best known for her role on the hit HBO series "Six Feet Under," which received widespread critical acclaim.

"I didn’t know that it was that big a deal," she said of the HBO series. "I knew that people liked it, and I was very proud to be part of such an amazing show. To me it’s one of the best shows on television that has ever been, and one of the best finales ever."

Watch Machado in "Queen of the South," which premieres June 23 at 10 p.m. on USA Network.
