In the 1980s, when all other major Olympic gold medalists were given a Wheaties box as tradition for their excellence in sport, Greg, the first diver ever awarded a perfect score, was denied the honor. As discussed in his HBO documentary “Back on Board,” this was presumably due to his sexuality.
This week, thanks to a grassroots petition started by a fan Julie Sondgerath in Chicago which collected over 50,000 signatures and a social campaign using #GetGregWheaties, General Mills has finally responded by agreeing to give Greg his deserved box!
This is a remarkable sign of the times and Greg would love the opportunity to tell the whole story of how this all came about, especially leading up to the Rio 2016 Games where he will be in attendance.
