Woman makes it her personal mission to help a homeless man get back on his feet

- Stephanie Gennaro was in a Walmart parking lot when she saw a man living in his broken-down truck. Unlike most people, Gennaro decided that she was going to help. Gennaro had seen the man in the parking lot before, but realized she didn’t even know his name.

“Everyone knows him as the Walmart guy,” Gennaro told Fox 29

Gennaro found out the man’s real name is Ed, and decided to see what she could do to help.

“I asked him what he liked to eat, and I went over to the Boston Market and came back with food,” said Gennaro. “And it was like an hour and a half later we got done talking.”

Ed had been laid-off and lost his home, so he’d moved into his car. On one of the coldest nights of the year, Gennaro decided she had to help. She promised Ed she’d come back the next day and take him to a hotel. The next day Gennaro made good on her promise.

Gennaro put Ed up in a hotel while she helped him apply for disability, and then found a small apartment he could afford. When Ed faced a medical crisis, Gennaro solicited donations to help him pay for his medical expenses, and made sure he had visitors and friendly faces in the hospital. Now Ed is ready to get back on his feet and is moving into his new apartment. But it’s not just Ed who’s benefited from this new friendship.

Said Gennaro, “Meeting him has changed my life.”
