Midday Sunday: Hate crimes against Muslims

The Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations reported recently that there was a significant increase in hate crimes directed at Muslims and others of Middle Eastern ancestry during November and December of 2015 compared to the previous year.
During his visit to Midday Sunday, Robin Toma, the commission's Executive Director, talks about how these particular crimes contradict the over-all trend toward fewer hate crimes in the greater Los Angeles area.

Overall, hate crimes directed at African Americans continue to be the biggest problem followed by hate crimes that victimize the LGBT communities as well as Jews and then Latinos.
Toma says one of the greatest opportunities for change begins in classrooms which is one of the places where the commission focuses its efforts.
Additional information is available on the commission's website at www.lahumanrelations.org.
