Movie Critic Matt Atchity: A WIld Bunch Of Films This Weekend

Matt Atchity, editor-in-chief for the pop-culture website Rotten Tomatoes, breaks down the movies to go see, and the ones to skip this weekend.

The Longest Ride – Rotten at 35%

  • Starring: Scott Eastwood, Brittany Robertson, Alan Alda, Oona Chaplin, Jack Huston, Lolita Davidovitch
  • Directed by: George Tillman Jr. (Faster, Notorious)
  • A college student with plans for the NY art world falls for a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback. A fateful connection with an old man may save their relationship. From the Nicholas Sparks book.
  • Critics don't like it. Too sappy and contrived, although it's better than a lot of other Sparks adaptations. I didn't like it, but I didn't totally hate it either.

Danny Collins – Fresh at 74%

  • Starring: Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Bobby Cannavale, Christopher Plummer
  • Directed by: Dan Fogelman (writer of Last Vegas, Crazy Stupid Love)
  • A washed up rocker from the 70s won't give up his hard-living ways, until a long lost letter from John Lennon finally gets delivered to him and gives him a new lease on life.
  • Critics like it. Pacino puts in one of his better performances in recent memory, and his supporting cast doesn't let him down. The movie manages to outshine its more predictable moments.

Ex Machina – Certified Fresh at 88%

  • Starring: Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac
  • Directed by: Alex Garland (writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine)
  • A computer programmer for an internet search giant is invited to the private estate of the reclusive CEO to evaluate the capabilities of a new A.I. project.
  • Critics love it. They say it's smart and engaging, and presents philosophical ideas on the nature of humanity while simultaneously telling a dramatic, romantic and tense story.

Marvel's Daredevil – Fresh at 93%

  • Starring: Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire), Rosario Dawson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Scott Glenn
  • Produced by: Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus on Starz) and Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, Lost)
  • Matt Murdock is a lawyer working in Hell's Kitchen in NY, still recovering from the effects of the alien attack in The Avengers. Matt may be blind, but that doesn't stop him from fighting crime in a mask at night.
  • Critics like it. It's a darker, grittier look at the Marvel Universe, and it really captures the feel of Frank Miller's run on the title in the 1980s. Available on Netflix. I really like it.

Game of Thrones Season 5 – Fresh at 100%

  • Starring: Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Maisie Wiliams, Sophie Turner, Aidan Gillen
  • Produced by: David Benioff, D. Weiss
  • Continuation of the wildly popular HBO series, based on the works of George R.R. Martin.
  • Critics like it. The adventure and intrigue is as exciting as ever, and has the plot veers farther away from the source material, both show and book fans will be in for some surprises this season. I really like it.
