(FOX11) - Mack 10 is a name synonymous with West Coast gangsta rap. Now, the hip hop artist who ran with Ice Cube is a promoter and working behind the scenes for artists like Lil Wayne, Snoop, and Brian McKnight. One of his favorite venues is the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.
Mack 10's real name is Dedrick Rolison. His platinum record turned him into westside rap royalty. He says in this day and age, it's all about the live music. He says for a show to be a success "you really need to promote. Shows don't promote themselves."
Mack 10 says he never wanted his kids to be in music. However, his son Dedrick Rolison Jr. apparently didn't listen. He goes by the name District 21 and has created a sound very different from gangsta rap.
Mack 10 hails from Inglewood. District 21 grew up in Calabasas and took up music all on his own. He writes about relationships and family and insecurities.
District 21's true passion is film-making and this fall he's off to Arizona State University. Mack 10 says one of his greatest accomplishments is how his music has allowed him to provide for his family.
This weekend, Mack 10 is back in Inglewood in concert at The Forum at the 93.5 Krush Groove with Snoop and a host of other artists from that era.
